Buying a horse is “an area fraught with difficulty for the unsuspecting would-be owner, whose path is not made easier by opportunists who exhibit horses and are ever on the look-out for a sale”. In this book, aimed at the novice rider and first-time buyer, the authors examine the cost involved in buying and keeping a horse, advise on selection (bearing in mind the rider’s level of experience and the job that will be required of the horse) and suggest possible sources of purchase. Following this, the trial and veterinary inspection are the most critical steps in the procedure; these are examined in depth so that the reader can make an informed decision based on the horse’s health, conformation, temperament and, therefore, suitability for his potential new owner.

Authors Mark Hallion and Julie Langrish – owners of Mayhill Stud, a successful livery stable – have nearly sixty years’ combined experience in buying and owning horses. During this time they have bought several hundred horses on their clients’ behalf and have even travelled as far afield as Russian (on two occasions) to find the right animal.
