Having successfully set up the Donkey Sanctuary to cope with the problems for donkeys in the United Kingdom, Elisabeth Svendsen, MBE, spread her concerns to donkeys abroad, with the setting up of the International Donkey Protection Trust.

This book recounts the range of Elisabeth Svendsen’s work in many countries where donkeys are often overburdened, overworked, underfed and maltreated.

Her travels have led to adventures both happy and sad in her quest to help not only the humble donkey but also, in many cases, its poverty-stricken owner. The book tells of the work of treating donkeys around the world – often with dramatic improvements to their health – and includes the story of rescuing a donkey victim at the annual ceremony in Villanueva de la Vera, amidst gunfire and drunken assault, and the delightful story of a donkey’s life being saved by the sanctuary in Lamu so successfully that she late bore a foal.

The gentle donkey has probably worked harder for man than any other species, and unfortunately its placid nature makes it an easy victim of exploitation. However, Elisabeth Svendsen and the International Donkey Protection Trust are fighting to better the animal’s lot throughout the world.
