Experienced German instructor Holger Heck, in partnership with talented artist Volker Greiner, has produced a marvellously instructive, thought-provoking and visually delightful book for the person who wishes to approach learning to ride in an intelligent and informed manner.
The introductory chapters cover the difficulties encountered by the beginner, the mentality of the horse, the ethics of using the horse for sport, and the choice of clothing, instructor and riding establishment on all of these subjects, the author has much to say that will not be found in conventional manuals of horsemanship.
The author explains the basics of horse care and saddlery, lungeing, the gaits and manege riding as well as the role of the rider and the principles of practice of horsemanship. He discusses the necessity of dressage and explains concepts that are frequently misunderstood even by experienced riders, such as the ‘deep seat’, ‘one the bit’, ‘half halt’ and ‘impulsion’. The language is simple, the humour wry. The illustrations are superb. The result is a book to be read with pleasure and to be regarded as a staunch ally to anyone aspiring to enter the world of horses and riding.
